Service Learning
Sponsor-Renee Riedelsperger
Service Learning at KEC is part of the larger organization Learn & Serve America. Students in Service Learning earn credit for completing service-related projects within our building and in the community at large. Many projects that we have done within the community include helping the YMCA set up their annual Haunted House, clothing drive with Youth Service Bureau, and shoveling sidewalks for elderly citizens. Our school-related projects have included helping to prepare and serve break and lunch at school, recycling, and setting up for special occasions at KEC. Service Learning helps our students to see and understand that volunteering is an important way to give back to the community.
Spirit Club
Sponsors-Amber Phelps, Sarah Vize & Julie Vassilogambros
Spirit Club is a club that gives back to KEC, its students, and community. We participate in volunteer activities, like our Thanksgiving Food Drive, volunteering at TAILS, mentoring new students and other community services. We give back to our community by participating in events like “Bowl for Kids’ Sake” and “Toys for Tots” which benefits underprivileged kids. We hold events at the school, like the Spelling Bee, Lucky Lotto, Mr. KEC, and our new incentive program that focuses on keeping students from getting referrals by entering those who are referral free in a monthly pizza drawing for a whole pizza. We provide school spirit to KEC by selling Spirit Bands, t shirts, key chains Door decorating contests, contributing to the Fall Fun Festival and Spring Fling. We encourage kids to do their best in school and stay out of trouble and attend everyday. We are a student based club, so we function on your input, support, and help.
Service Club
Sponsors- Kristal Templin & Cheryl Lehman
The service club is a group for students who are interested in becoming involved in volunteer opportunities within the school and our community. The club meets regularly to discuss ways that we can make a positive impact on those around us. Recently, the service club organized the kick-off of KEC’s recycling program. We have also volunteered through involvement with the United Way Day of Caring, serving lunch at the Senior Center in DeKalb, playing bingo with senior citizens, delivering Meals on Wheels in Sycamore, and making care packages for soldiers in Afghanistan. Members of the service club are also available to teachers and staff at KEC to help with projects as needed.
